WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The United States will withhold some $800 million in military assistance to Pakistan, the White House said on Sunday.
White House Chief of Staff William Daley told ABC's "This Week" program that Pakistan had "taken some steps" that have given the Obama administration "reason to pause" on aid."
Daley said the U.S. and Pakistan are trying to "work through" issues as part of a complicated relationship, and there remains "a lot of pain" in that political system following the U.S. raid that killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May.
"But the Pakistani relationship is difficult but it must be made to work over time. But until we get through these difficulties we will hold back some of the money that the American taxpayers have committed to give them," he said.
