community supervision.? Chief Probation Officer Lisa Stapleton of the Virginia Department of Corrections led a series of presentations by probation officers and City substance abuse and mental health treatment staff.? Topics included substance abuse, mental health & criminal justice collaborations, sex offender supervision and treatment, as well as Department of Corrections and local Reentry initiatives.
The highlight of the presentation came when two individuals who had successfully completed their probation, shared their stories.? One of these former clients was convicted of a sex offense, and the other had had a long-term substance abuse problem and had been in and out of prison or jail most of his life.? The group members were clearly moved by their stories and were impressed with the positive changes they had made in their lives.
The delegation came to Virginia as part of a program coordinated by the American Correctional Association, whose offices are also located in Alexandria.
