Global Strategies: "The risk of ending the session without ...

Nielsen, susan I agree with Oregonian columnist Susan Nielsen when she writes (here):

It's sunny outside, finally, and the end of Oregon's legislative session is in sight. Lawmakers are so close to going home that they can taste it. Clouding the mood, however, is the risk of ending the session without accomplishing a single meaningful thing on K-12 educationod, however, is .

She goes on in her column ?Shortchanging K-12 education: Oregon legislators teeter on anti-schools ledge? to list ?the top three school-related items on my 3 30 11 003edited go-home list:? ? which are PERS reform, ESD reform and ?Reforms related to capital gains, kicker checks and forced savings.?

These are, of course, important issues, but they are not the changes most needed by Oregon?s educational system. Given ongoing changes in the global economic and geopolitical systems, we need to strengthen foreign language programs (more immersion and study abroad opportunities). Given technological changes, we need to take advantage of online learning to create more educational opportunities and to cut costs. Both efforts, sadly, seem dead in this legislature. More money or stabilizing revenues for schools will not make these changes.
