Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan failed to save her brother from jail on Thursday after her desperate plea for leniency relating to his assault convictions was rejected by a Massachusetts judge.
Mark Kerrigan was arrested after his 70-year-old dad Daniel was found unconscious in the kitchen of the family home in Massachusetts in January, 2010. Officials ruled he died from cardiac dysrhythmia after suffering a neck injury during a physical altercation shortly before he passed away.
A Superior Court jury in Woburn acquitted the 46 year old of a manslaughter charge on Wednesday, but he was found guilty of two lesser counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on an elderly person and causing serious bodily injury.
He faced up to two-and-a-half years imprisonment for the convictions when he returned to court on Thursday and former sportswoman Nancy appealed to the judge to show her brother leniency.
She told the court, "None of us has had a chance to grieve for my father. Please send him home with us today so we can grieve as a family."
Mark also begged for clemency, saying: "I lost my father, and I miss him very much. I'd like the opportunity to go home with my family."
But the pleas were rejected and Kerrigan was handed the maximum sentence of two-and-a-half years, although six months of the term will be suspended.
Kerrigan will be eligible for parole in six months.
