The Infallible Dictionary

The infallible, dictionary shouldn?t be narrowed down to just language, when in reality there is so much more to a dictionary. According to the Merriam Webster?s Dictionary, the definition of a dictionary is ?a reference book containing words usually alphabetically arranged along with information about their forms, pronunciations, functions, etymologies,meanings, and syntactical, and idiomatic uses.? This definition does not give the word dictionary justice, because as we will see a dictionary can be so much more than just language, it can be a reference book containing jargon in specialized fields of interest.Dictionaries are not just for words, or to enrich our vocabulary, there are other types that exist in our society. We have specialized dictionaries that exist, helping us define different professions, or interests. There is such a large variety of dictionaries it would be a crime not to mention them all, but I will only mention a few to show the vastness of different types of dictionaries that exist within our society. We have medical, law, culinary,religious, gardening, automotive, pedagogy, and so many more different types of dictionaries that help us understand the jargon, or different terminology within each respective art, or profession.What does this mean? This means that there is a language within a language. You agree that different professions speak their own terminology, doctors speak differently from those that practice law, teaching, automotive, or gardening. Each profession speaking their own jargon. The infallible, valuable dictionary helps us understand one another just the same as when we go to a different country, and try to understand their language. The dictionary helps us cross those barriers. This means not only does it give us the meaning of words, information on how to use words properly, find the history of our language (which is etymology), or how to pronounce words correctly, it is bigger in the sense that it helps us define other professions.?Yes, the dictionary is valuable. It is a tool that helps writers define what they are trying to say in the way they want to express their thoughts. The dictionary we have established gives us the meaning of words, gives us a history of where our words come from, and how to use, and pronounce words properly, but it also crosses barriers within the professions, and arts, that live among us in our society.
