VIERA, Fla. -- Bryce Harper reported for spring training today and made it clear what he must do to be included on the Nationals' Opening Day roster.

"I'm going to come in here, work as hard as I can, keep my mouth shut and play," he said.

In truth, the 19-year-old's path to Wrigley Field on April 5 is a bit more complicated than that. Simply showing up to camp, working hard and keeping his mouth closed isn't going to guarantee Harper anything.

But the gregarious right fielder does seem to understand that the spotlight will be fixed on him for the next six weeks, and it's up to him to prove he's ready to handle the attention ... not to mention big-league pitching.

One year ago, Harper (barely 18 and barely removed from high school) reported for his first professional spring training and looked the part. He stood out like a sore thumb in the Nationals' clubhouse, a cocky teenager among men.

As he made his way through that same clubhouse today, though, Harper looked like he belonged more. He already knows most of the other players. He already knows the daily routine.

"I'm pretty comfortable this year, knowing guys around me," he said. "I'm just a lot more comfortable in here this year, and I'm excited to see what happens."

What will happen? The company line remains the same: The Nationals will keep an open mind on bringing Harper north with them at the end of camp, but the odds continue to be against that happening. Ideally, they'd like for him to get a few at-bats at Class AAA Syracuse before making his big-league debut, not wanting to risk rushing a player who only has one season of professional experience to this point.

Harper does have a big supporter, though, in manager Davey Johnson, who has never been afraid to throw a talented, young player to the wolves. "It's huge to have the manager on your side," Harper said.

Johnson perhaps softened his stance today on the 2010 No. 1 pick making the club out of spring training, citing the influx of left-handed bats the Nationals signed late this winter. At the same time: "He's still in the mix to have an opportunity," Johnson said and suggested Harper will see significant playing time against big-league competition this spring.

On the field, Harper believes he's made major strides in the last year, especially in the outfield. A converted catcher, he feels more comfortable now in right field and has learned how and when to cut loose on throws.

"I made a lot of progress in the outfield, and I'm still going to try to make progress out there," he said. "I want to be a Gold Glove out there, too. I don't want to just be known as a hitter."

Off the field, Harper understands he needs to show he's ready to be a big leaguer, whether that's how he comports himself in the clubhouse or even how he presents himself on his newest passion: Twitter.

Harper has taken some heat for his honest answers via his Twitter account, but he loves interacting with fans and doesn't want to change that.

"That's just the way I am," he said. "I like giving them the real me. I want them to know the real me."

Even if you open yourself to criticism by declaring yourself a fan of the Lakers, Cowboys and Duke basketball?

"I'm going to get blown up either way," Harper said. "If I say something right or something wrong, that's just how it's going to be. There's nothing I can really do about that. Some things maybe I shouldn't say, and some things I've got to learn from. And there are some things I should just keep my mouth shut on. I need to grow up in that aspect, I guess. But I feel good about what I say and I'm not going to back down from anything."

Ultimately, Harper believes the decision when to promote him to the majors is a baseball decision. So that's where his focus will be over the next six weeks, playing every day "with fire" and hoping by the end of camp he's convinced the right people he deserves to be a big leaguer at 19.

"That's the best I can do," he said. "If they want to send me back down, that's them. But I want to be up here, like I said. I want to play in D.C."

PARIS (AP) ? Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was being held for questioning Tuesday by French police investigating a suspected hotel prostitution ring.

Strauss-Kahn, a one-time French presidential hopeful whose chances were derailed by a sexual assault accusation, arrived at the police station in the northern city of Lille for a pre-arranged morning appointment and was still there in the late afternoon.

Police are probing a suspected prostitution ring in France and neighboring Belgium that has implicated police and other officials. They have questioned prostitutes who said they had sex with Strauss-Kahn during 2010 and 2011 at a luxury hotel in Paris, a restaurant in the French capital and also in Washington, D.C.

French law permits police to question Strauss-Kahn for 48 hours, and then for another 48 hours with a judge's approval.

Strauss-Kahn lived in the U.S. capital while he was head of the IMF before resigning his position in May after he was charged by New York police with making a hotel maid perform oral sex. The charges were later dropped.

Two men with ties to Strauss-Kahn have been put under preliminary investigation in France on charges including organizing a prostitution ring and misuse of corporate funds.

Strauss-Kahn's name surfaced in the investigation last fall and his lawyer has asked that Strauss-Kahn be allowed to tell his side of the story. One of Strauss-Kahn's lawyers has said that the former French presidential hopeful never knew that the women at orgies he attended were prostitutes.

"He could easily not have known, because as you can imagine, at these kinds of parties you're not always dressed, and I challenge you to distinguish a naked prostitute from any other naked woman," Henri Leclerc told French radio Europe 1 in December.

French newspapers have dubbed the investigation "The Carlton Affair" after the name of the expensive Lille hotel where some of the meetings took place.

Investigators are seeking to discover if prostitutes were paid using corporate funds from a large French construction company.

New York prosecutors dropped the sexual assault case against Strauss-Kahn in August because the woman had undercut her credibility by lying about her background and changing her account of her actions right after the alleged attack. She says she was truthful about the encounter and is pursuing her claims in a lawsuit.

Strauss-Kahn has said the sexual encounter was "inappropriate" but not violent.

In a separate case last October, French prosecutors refused to pursue an allegation by a young French writer of attempted rape by Strauss-Kahn.

The Paris prosecutor's office dropped the investigation into writer Tristane Banon's claim that Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her during a 2003 interview for a book the then-23-year-old was writing, saying they couldn't send him to trial because it happened too long ago.

Spain tells banks to cover toxic assets or merge (AP)

MADRID ? Spanish banks must raise an additional euro50 billion ($65.5 billion) to cover their exposure to toxic real estate loans and assets accumulated during a construction boom that went bust with the financial crisis, according to new regulations unveiled Thursday.

Banks unable to meet the new provisions to cover troubled holdings will have the option of presenting merger plans to the government by May and could get government assistance from an existing bailout fund that will be strengthened with an addition euro6 billion, said Economy Minister Luis de Guindos.

Cleaning up the festering holdings of Spain's ailing banking system is a key issue in the drive by the new center-right government to restore investor confidence in the eurozone's fourth largest economy, and prevent Spain from being forced into a bailout like Greece, Ireland and Portugal were forced to take. Banks that want to meet the new provisions without merging will have until the end of the year to do so, de Guindos said.

Spanish banks have about euro175 billion in troubled holdings, and de Guindos said the new rules would prompt many banks to reduce the value of their property holdings. That would lead to further price drops for real estate that saw stunning increases from the mid-1990s until the crisis hit in 2008 but still have not declined as much as experts believe they should.

The reform plan is similar to a 2009 push that forced banks to increase provisions against real estate holdings and bad loans to 30 percent and set off a wave of mergers, but de Guindos said the new rules to protect banks from losses will boost that figure to as much as 80 percent.

The cabinet of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy plans to approve the measures Friday. They will be sent to Parliament for final approval, but passage is guaranteed because Rajoy's Popular Party has an absolute majority.

The last banking reform plan under Spain's previous Socialist government saw the number of smaller banking chains called 'cajas' dwindle from 42 to 15, and de Guindos offered no prediction of how many will remain after the new rules are put into place.

"I don't know how many will be left after the process, but the aim is to have a banking system with stronger and healthier institutions and better corporate guidance," he told reporters.

Fernando Fernandez, an economist at Madrid's IE Business School, said the rules are so tough that many of those left will be forced into mergers because they won't be able to meet the new provisions to cover toxic holdings.

But Spain's much larger international banks ? Banco Santander SA and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA ? will be able to meet the provisions with less profit for their shareholders, he added.

Many Spanish banks have refused to lower the value of foreclosed property on their books, and Fernandez agreed with de Guindos that the new reform could force them to start unloading real estate at firesale prices.

"This reform is aimed at putting homes on the market at reduced prices," de Guindos said.

It's also aimed at freeing up credit that has been drying up for businesses and individuals, he said, and should "improve the transparency and the perception of strength of the Spanish (financial) entities, entities will be able provide more financing."

The bank reform plan came less than a week after Spanish unemployment shot up to 22.9 percent, maintaining its ranking as the highest among the 17 nations that use the euro. The rate for adults under age 25 is an astonishing 48.5 percent.

Rajoy's government is expected later this month to enact a controversial labor reform plan that will make it cheaper for businesses to fire workers, and for them to negotiate with unions at a company level instead of with entire sectors.

Under the current system, people who are laid off or fired must be paid between 20 to 33 days of salary per year worked, and companies can't negotiate directly with their unionized workers because they must adopt wage deals set for entire sectors.

The government last week also unveiled a budget-discipline law that will allow the government to impose penalties on debt-laden regional governments if they run deficits after 2020. Spain's regions ? like states or provinces ? must bring their spending under control by that year or face possible fines of 0.2 percent of regional gross domestic product.

Government spending cuts and income tax increases were imposed several weeks after Rajoy took power.
