Maingear reveals more heat-dissipating desktops, keeps those new Ivy Bridge internals cool

Maingear reveals more heat-dissipating desktops, keeps those new Ivy Bridge internals cool

Maingear gave us a quick nudge to say something was coming. Now it can reveal that -- alongside Intel's third-generation processors inside all of its desktops and laptops -- it's further updated two of its tower models. The F131 ($1,049), the middleweight option, now houses the same vertical heat-dissipating design found on Maingear's Shift model, alongside hot-swappable storage. It's followed by the Potenza ($899), the company's "mini-ITX gaming solution." It's 45 percent smaller than the F131 with the same heat dissipation design, but still capable of squeezing in NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680 and support for a liquid cooling setup on the side. Phew. So pick your size, pick your processor and hit up the source for all the custom desktop options.

The MacPad Will Come - but Software Convergence Will Come First

Despite all the fantastic numbers delivered by Apple when it revealed its latest fiscal quarterly profits this week -- such as an eye-popping 94 percent net profit year-to-year increase -- one question and one rambling answer from Apple CEO Tim Cook made me sit up in my chair. The question: Will Apple create a converged iPad/MacBook with a built-in keyboard?

UK department store John Lewis launches broadband service, get in on the ground floor

UK department store John Lewis launches broadband service, get in on the ground floorIf you live in the UK, and were thinking "If only I could get my broadband from the same place I get my crystal tumbler set" then maybe now you can. Department store John Lewis, a favorite for wedding lists, furniture and homeware is branching out into the British ISP game. The standard package will be £11 a month (not including line rental,) offering "up to" 16Mb speeds and a 20GB data cap. More eager users can pay and extra £7 to remove that download limit. Both bundles benefit from a free phone support, no activation fee and, of course, wireless router. Sound like your kind of deal? Head down to the source link, or past the haberdashery section to find out more.

Ju-Ju-Be Micra Be Laptop Bag

Comfortable and compact, the Ju-Ju-Be Micra Be Laptop bag ($90, direct) protects tablets, ereaders, small netbooks, and other flat electronics very well without weighing you down. Constructed with an eye toward details, this multipurpose electronics bag has several features that point toward a long life: secure stitching, metal fasteners and zipper pulls, and tough but washable fabric. The only thing holding back this bag from donning your shoulder for a decade or more is that it's not available in classic prints and colors. A small selection of prints, including "fuchsia blossoms" and "jungle maze" (shown) may look dated sooner than you'd like.

The 1-pound bag measures 8.5 by 11.5 by 2.5 inches (HWD). It has two tiered front storage sections, plus a quick-access pouch in the rear. When unzipped, the main pouch hinges open to almost 90 degrees with two compartments on the inside for small gear and an elastic strap on the flap side to hold your tablet in place. An iPad fits perfectly, as do netbooks smaller than about 12 inches. I wish the elastic band had been on the inside, however, as that seemed the more natural location for my tablet, rather than the part that folds outward.

The Micra Be's perforated foam cushioning and breathable lining help ensure your devices can cool down when you slip them into the bag. A soft inner lining in the main pouch, and in the pockets of the smaller front pouch, protects your gadgets from getting scratched. The bag also comes with a matching drawstring purse (6.5 by 5.75 inches) for storing cables, a mouse, or other small components.

I love that the fabric is both machine washable and easy to wipe down with a damp cloth for spot cleaning. The adjustable messenger strap felt comfortable while I walked a few miles one evening carrying the Micra Be.

The Ju-Ju-Be Micra Be Laptop bag securely and comfortably stores your gear, and is built to last many years. For its construction, I recommend it highly, but for its print designs, I only wish Ju-Ju-Be included a few more classic options.
