O'Reilly, Stewart joust at mock debate

(AP) ? This high-stakes debate had some props that even the presidential candidates might want at their own events.

Jon Stewart came prepared with a mechanical pedestal he used to elevate himself, making the height-challenged comedian appear taller than the lanky Bill O'Reilly when he wanted to drive a point home.

"I like you much better that way," O'Reilly quipped at one point as he gazed up at his ideological foe.

The two celebrity gabbers have claimed their stakes to polar opposite ends of the political spectrum and on Saturday night they tangled in an event dubbed "The Rumble in the Air-Conditioned Auditorium."

The 90-minute exchange between the Fox News anchor and the star of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," saw them banter aggressively but good-naturedly over birth control, President George W. Bush and the so-called "War on Christmas."

The political feud between the two TV personalities dates back more than a decade. Stewart and O'Reilly love to disagree, but appear to hold nothing against each other afterward. The two have appeared on each other's programs since 2001, but the face-off at The George Washington University marked their first head-to-head debate.

Appearing presidential in dark jackets under a sign reading "Yum, this banner tastes like freedom," the two quickly turned to talk of government spending and the 47 percent of Americans that Republican Mitt Romney said in a video are dependent on government.

Stewart, defending government involvement in health care and social programs, said the U.S. from its earliest days has always been an entitlement nation.

"We are a people that went to another country, saw other people on it and said, 'Yea, we want that,'" Stewart said. "Have you ever seen 'Oprah's favorite things' episode?"

Asked who he'd like to see as president, O'Reilly dead-panned: "I'd have to say Clint Eastwood."

"Well why don't we ask him," said Stewart, mocking the Hollywood actor's widely panned speech in August at the Republican National Convention by getting out of his chair and staring at it while the crowd erupted in laughter.

In an apparent show of bipartisanship, Stewart even sat on O'Reilly's lap at one point. "And what would you like for Christmas, little boy?" O'Reilly said.

"The display that you saw tonight is why America is America. Robust, creative, no holds barred," O'Reilly told reporters after the debate.

Organizers said about 1,500 people attended the event, but the main audience was intended to be online, where the event was live-streamed for $4.95. On Twitter, viewers complained they missed the event when the video servers crashed. Organizers said video will be available for download and that those who experienced problems will be eligible for a refund.

Purchasing a new vehicle is always a very exciting experience to a lot of people. As a matter of fact, other people even see it to be more convenient on their part if they just go over the pages of their phone directories and dial the number of whichever dealer that captured their interest and then sign up for the first persons who answer the line. Then again, since the primary goal here is to find the best, then giving a little effort is really necessary.

Obama boosted by upbeat housing reports, new polls

(AP) ? Fresh signs of a national housing rebound and growing support in public opinion polls boosted President Barack Obama's bid for a new term in the White House on Wednesday as Republican rival Mitt Romney struggled to quell his video controversy.

The challenger's attempts to get his campaign back on track ran into new difficulty in the form of criticism from rank-and-file Republicans concerned about their own election prospects in the fall.

"I have a very different view of the world," said appointed Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada, taking issue with Romney's dismissive comments about the 47 percent of all Americans who pay no income taxes. Separately, Senate GOP leaders avoided answering questions about their presidential candidate at a news conference in the Capitol.

After days of virtually non-stop political damage control on issues foreign and domestic, Romney told an audience at an Atlanta fundraiser: "The question of this campaign is not who cares about the poor and the middle class. I do. He (Obama) does. The question is who can help the poor and the middle class. I can. He can't."

The former Massachusetts governor spoke about 48 hours after a video emerged that showed him telling donors last May that as a candidate for the White House, "my job is not to worry about" the millions of Americans who don't earn enough to pay income taxes.

Obama spent the day in the White House, a rarity in a race with less than seven weeks yet to run. He invited democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar to the Oval Office, a chat between two Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Romney raised campaign cash in Georgia, then headed for an evening speech in battleground Florida, his first appearance before a public audience since the emergence of the videotape. Under pressure from fellow Republicans to campaign more extensively, he was considering adding at least one appearance to a light weekend schedule, officials said.

In a campaign dominated all year by the sluggish economy, the government said construction of single-family homes jumped to the highest rate in more than two years. Separately, the National Association of Realtors reported that home sales rose last month to the highest level since May 2010.

Real estate has been among the slowest sectors of the economy to recover from the national downturn of 2008. The administration has struggled to reverse a decline in home values that left millions who managed to avoid foreclosure owing more on their mortgages than their homes are worth.

A new AP-GfK poll ? taken before the Romney video was revealed ? put Obama's overall approval rating among voting-age adults at 56 percent. That was above 50 percent for the first time since May, and at its highest level since the death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden more than a year ago.

Among likely voters, however, the race was a statistical tie, with Obama at 47 percent and Romney at 46 percent.

The two were also tied statistically when it came to handling the economy and the federal deficit, while the president was preferred on issues of protecting the country, handling health care and understanding the problems of "people like you." On a question of personal credibility, 50 percent of likely voters said Obama more often says what he really believes, while 42 percent said that applied to Romney.

At the same time, 61 percent of likely voters described the economy as poor, and only 22 percent described it as good more than 3 ? years after Obama took office, another indication of the challenges he faces as he bids for a new term in a time of long-term unemployment over 8 percent nationally.

Other new surveys suggested growing support for Obama in the wake of back-to-back national political conventions and Romney's struggle last week to explain an erroneous statement issued at a time of demonstrations ? some deadly ? at U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll taken Sept. 12-16 put the president's lead among likely voters at 50-44 percent nationwide.

State surveys by Quinnipiac University, The New York Times and CBS News showed Obama at over 50 percent support among likely voters in Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, and Wisconsin, with 10. Obama carried Wisconsin handily four years ago, but Romney recently signaled he was hoping to make it competitive.

The two men were in a statistical tie in Colorado, which has 9 electoral votes, in surveys conducted between Sept. 11 and 17.

A Washington Post poll also showed Obama with a lead in Virginia.

All the surveys were taken before the flap erupted over Romney's "47 percent" remarks.

Taken together, they showed a highly competitive race as Obama and Romney pursue the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, although with the president in a stronger position than before the two political conventions and with the economy still the dominant issue.

"This is our election to lose," maintained Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. "There's a reason no president has ever been elected with economic numbers like this. If Obama wins, he'll be rewriting political history."

For now, Romney is working to reframe the video controversy into a philosophical difference between himself and Obama ? to his own advantage.

"Instead of creating a web of dependency, I will pursue policies that grow our economy and lift Americans out of poverty," he wrote in an article in USA Today that omitted any reference to the furor.

At his fundraiser in Atlanta, however, he referred for a second day in a row to a video of Obama, made in 1998. An Illinois state senator at the time, Obama said he believed in income redistribution, "at least to a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot."

Romney added that the country "does not work by a government saying, become dependent on government, become dependent upon redistribution. That will kill the American entrepreneurship that's lifted our economy over the years."

Responding for the president, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Romney's efforts to push the 14-year-old video were the work of a candidate having "a very bad day or a very bad week."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took up the cause in highly personal terms.

"So who are those Americans Mitt Romney disdains as 'victims' and 'those people?'" the Nevada Democrat said in a speech on the Senate floor. "They're not avoiding their tax bills, using Cayman Island tax shelters or Swiss bank accounts like Mitt Romney."

Romney's campaign released two television ads accusing the Obama administration of conducting a "war on coal." Aides said they were triggered by an announcement on Tuesday by Alpha Natural Resources that it will close mines in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and eliminate 1,200 jobs.

Redux: A second look at the LG Optimus G

LG Optimus G.

We're just sitting down for a little more intimate time with the LG Optimus G here in Seoul, South Korea. And that means a couple things. For one, it means pictures that don't suck as much. For another, we're getting a better feel for the phone and the new user experience that LG's celebrating.

A few quick, initial thoughts, with the caveat that these are preproduction units:

  • For one, this thing is fast, fast, fast. OK, that's three. But it's worth repeating. The quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro is a little ridiculous.
  • The display is gorgeous -- 4.7-inches of deep blacks and vibrant colors.
  • Know how much I like HTC's lockscreen? And Samsung's? LG's is as good. You've got some icon shortcuts,  which do the obvious. But when you simply unlock the device, you get a preview of what you're unlocking to. That's a very nice detail.
  • The 13-megapixel camera has a quick shutter speed. Maybe not quite instantaneous, but it's damn quick. You've got a bunch of options in the camera app, including HDR and panorama.
  • The camera app also does a bit of magic wherein it's actually recording before you press the shutter. So if you don't quite snap the shot in time, you don't necessarily miss the pic.
  • Now that we're actually sitting down with the phone, we've got a better feel for the heft of the device. It's certainly not the lightest on the block, but neither is that a big negative for us. That might change a little when we see different internals in the U.S. versions.
  • The keyboard is surprisingly good. It's not perfect -- secondary functions could be triggered a little more quickly. But it's very much usable out of the box. That's not always the case with manufacturer's keyboards.
  • I'm very much digging the smooth, glossy back with the diamond design, called a crystal reflection finish. It might be a little too slick for some, though.
  • You know how almost every phone has ignored the cool TV-off effect that first showed up in Gingerbread? LG's got its own version, with focusing in on a
  • Watching Korean TV on a phone is still cool.

That's it for now. We've got a bevy of better pics after the break.

Obama?s debate foe: Long-windedness

President Barack Obama points to the crowd as he leaves a campaign event at Eden Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Carolyn??President Barack Obama's campaign on Monday tried to tamp down expectations for his debate performance against Mitt Romney, and acknowledged that the former law professor needs to learn to shorten his answers.

"While Mitt Romney has done 20 debates in the last year, he has not done one in four years, so there certainly is a challenge in that regard," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One as Obama headed out on a day-long political swing in Ohio.

"The shorter format of the debates is not always conducive to somebody who gives comprehensive, substantive answers, which we know he tends to do from the number of town halls he's been [to]," she said.

Substantive? That means "long-winded," right?

"I think that he and his team are aware that that is a challenge when you have the opportunity to give shorter answers, that you can't give a five-minute explanation for an issue," Psaki said.

It's been widely reported that Democratic Senator John Kerry will play Romney in Obama's debate preparations. But Psaki declined to share other details about how the president is getting ready for his three face-to-face sessions with the Republican standard-bearer.

"I can confirm three things: [One,] He will be at the debates, participating.? Two, he will be--let's see, what else can I confirm for you--he's not debated in four years," she said. Third was the comment about the president's tendency to give long-form replies to questions.

But "we have no plans to read out or confirm how he's going to be preparing for the debates," she said.

And what good would Psaki be if she didn't also try to raise the expectations for Romney? (It's a classic D.C. spin game that relies on reporters judging performance based on what was expected rather than what was achieved.)

"We know that Mitt Romney and his team have seemed to prepare more than any candidate in modern history, starting in July, taking time out during the Democratic Convention, taking that week to prepare," she said.

"And they have made clear that his performing well is a make-or-break piece for their campaign and his candidacy," she added.

Obama warns Egypt: Are you ally or enemy?

Egyptian soldiers stand guard in front of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. (Nasser Nasser/AP)

President Barack Obama says he will decide whether Egypt is an ally or an enemy of the United States in part according to the way the fledgling government in Cairo responds to the violent assault on the American Embassy there on Monday.

"Certainly in this situation what we're going to expect is that they are responsive to our insistence that our embassy is protected, our personnel is protected," Obama said. "And if they take actions that indicate they're not taking responsibilities, as all other countries do where we have embassies, I think that's going to be a real big problem."

The president?his handling of the so-called "Arab Spring" under fresh scrutiny after attacks on American diplomatic posts in Egypt, Libya and Yemen?had been asked by Telemundo whether he sees Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's government as an ally.

"I don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy. They're a new government that is trying to find its way," Obama replied in what, by the standards of diplomatic talk, amounted to a blunt warning.

"They were democratically elected. I think that we are going to have to see how they respond to this incident. How they respond to, for example, maintaining the peace treaty with Israel," he added.

"So far, at least, what we've seen is that in some cases they've said the right things and taken the right steps. In others, how they've responded to various events may not be aligned with our interests," Obama said. "So I think it's still a work in progress."

Under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt benefited from close ties to Washington, including tight military-to-military relations and vast aid packages topping $1 billion per year, making Cairo one of the top recipients of American assistance. That relationship changed when Mubarak was overthrown amid mass protests, and Washington has been closely watching Morsi's government. The incident on Monday, in which demonstrators stormed the American Embassy compound and tore down the American flag, was the latest flash point?and an obvious test for both U.S.-Egypt relations and Obama's efforts to defend American interests in the volatile aftermath of the Arab Spring.

Obama and Morsi spoke by telephone on Wednesday "to review the strategic relationship" between the two countries "and our ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral economic and security cooperation," the White House said in a statement. On Thursday, the Egyptian leader condemned the assault on the American facility.

"Given recent events, and consistent with our interest in a relationship based on mutual interests and mutual respect, President Obama underscored the importance of Egypt following through on its commitment to cooperate with the United States in securing U.S. diplomatic facilities and personnel," it said.

Amid concerns that an anti-Islam video on the Internet may be fueling unrest in the Muslim world, Obama "said that he rejects efforts to denigrate Islam, but underscored that there is never any justification for violence against innocents and acts that endanger American personnel and facilities."

Morsi "expressed his condolences for the tragic loss of American life in Libya and emphasized that Egypt would honor its obligation to ensure the safety of American personnel."

Obama also spoke to Libya's President Mohamed Magariaf of Libya late Wednesday, even as Americans reeled from word that the highly regarded ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, had been killed as a result of a raid on the consulate in that country's city of Benghazi.

"President Obama thanked President Magariaf for extending his condolences for the tragic deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, and two other State Department officers in Benghazi yesterday," the White House said. Obama thanked Magariaf for his government's help in responding to that attack but underlined "that the Libyan government must continue to work with us to assure the security of our personnel going forward."

"The president made it clear that we must work together to do whatever is necessary to identify the perpetrators of this attack and bring them to justice ," the White House said.

On the home front, Obama waged a pitched political battle with Mitt Romney, who drew fire even from some in his party for a late-Tuesday statement in which he leveled the inflammatory charge that the Obama administration had sided with those who killed Americans. Romney essentially reiterated that accusation in a Wednesday press conference held after Stevens' death had become public.

But if Romney blundered with his response, the crisis highlighted the danger that sudden world events could pose to Obama's re-election bid?even in a contest most heavily shaped by the sour economy.

New National School Speed Test hopes to help all K-12 students get effective digital learning

EducationSuperHighway launches National School Speed Test to help all K12 students get effective digital learning

With 99 percent of the nation's K-12 schools hooked-up to the internet, you'd think online learning was an educational staple. Sadly, it's also estimated that some 80 percent of those connections can't provide the 100Mbps per 1,000 students bandwidth the State Education Technology Directors Association recommends. That's why NPO EducationSuperHigway has announced the National School Speed Test initiative, with the goal to take actual stock of the state of internet connections in our schools. The NSST hopes to measure the internet capabilities of every K-12 school, and identify those that are lagging behind. Educational staff and students can also help out by checking their own school's speeds on a dedicated website (linked below). The results of the NSST will be open to the institutions themselves, districts and state departments of education, enabling them to better plan upgrade strategies for the future.

Whooping cough vaccine loses punch too fast

(AP) ? As the U.S. wrestles with its biggest whooping cough outbreak in decades, researchers appear to have zeroed in on the main cause: The safer vaccine that was introduced in the 1990s loses effectiveness much faster than previously thought.

A study published in Wednesday's New England Journal of Medicine found that the protective effect weakens dramatically soon after a youngster gets the last of the five recommended shots around age 6.

The protection rate falls from about 95 percent to 71 percent within five years, said researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Research Center in Oakland, Calif.

The U.S. has had more than 26,000 whooping cough cases so far this year, including more than 10,000 in children ages 7 to 10.

"The substantial majority of the cases are explained by this waning immunity," said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious-disease specialist at Vanderbilt University.

In light of the findings and earlier, similar research, health officials are considering recommending another booster shot for children, strengthening the vaccine or devising a brand new one.

But "there's nothing in the pipeline that's close," said Dr. Tom Clark of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial disease that can strike people of any age but is most dangerous to children. Its name comes from the sound youngsters make as they gasp for breath.

It used to be common, causing hundreds of thousands of illnesses annually and thousands of deaths. Cases dropped after a vaccine was introduced in the 1940s, and for decades, fewer than 5,000 a year were reported in the U.S.

Because of side effects that included pain and swelling at the injection site, fever and apparently, in rare cases, brain damage, the vaccine was replaced in the 1990s. The newer version used only parts of the bacterium instead of the whole thing and carried fewer complications.

But cases of whooping cough began to climb, sometimes topping 25,000 a year during the past decade. Also disturbing: The proportion of cases involving children ages 7 to 10 ? most of them vaccinated ? rose from less than 10 percent before 2006 to nearly 40 percent this year, according to the CDC.

Dr. Nicola Klein and her colleagues looked at children ages 4 to 12 who received their health care through Kaiser Permanente Northern California from 2006 to 2011. They compared 277 fully vaccinated youngsters who got whooping cough to similar, vaccinated children who didn't.

The researchers found that the risk of getting whooping cough increases by about 42 percent a year after a child's last dose of vaccine.

The shortcomings in the vaccine did not become apparent until recently, when researchers had the benefit of several years of data uncorrupted by youngsters who received the old version.

Health officials have long recommended that children get vaccinated in five doses, with the first shot at 2 months and the final one between 4 and 6 years, and receive a booster shot at 11 or 12.

Now there's a growing consensus that something more needs to be done. Ideas include somehow pumping up the effectiveness of the vaccine or developing a new one. French scientists have been working on an experimental nasal spray vaccine.

Other ideas include administering the booster earlier than age 11 or adding another booster.

While some parents around the country have taken a stand against childhood vaccines, the outbreak is not being driven by unvaccinated children, according to the CDC. Most of the illnesses are in vaccinated youngsters, officials said.

Dr. Maxine Hayes, health officer for the Washington State Department of Health, said it is important that people not mistake waning immunity for flat-out ineffectiveness.

The vaccine is "still the best thing we have," she said. And vaccinated people who get whooping cough don't get as sick.

Omar Gonzalez of North Richland Hills, Texas, has become a believer in the vaccine, even though his fully vaccinated 11-year-old son caught whooping cough three years ago.

"Imagine seeing your son gasping for air," Gonzalez said. "This is really bad."

Gonzalez, who runs an investment company from his home, spent weeks caring for his son and then got sick himself.

"You don't want this, man, I'm telling you. It's scary," he said.

Panda Antivirus Pro 2013

The user interface for many modern antivirus programs soothes the eye with simple shapes and pastel colors. Panda Security definitely isn't in that camp. The vibrant colors of Panda Antivirus Pro 2013 definitely stand out from the crowd, but as far as effective protection goes it's in the middle of the pack.

Even during installation Panda shows more color than most. The activation screen is backed by eye-catching color gradients, for example. When installation is complete, the product's main window offers icons that activate various security components. You'll also see several icons related to features found in Panda's full security suite product line. Clicking these gets a feature description along with an offer to upgrade.

Minor Installation Challenges
Panda Antivirus installed just fine on ten of my twelve infested test systems. Malware prevented activation on two of those, but it didn't block access to updates, so I had no trouble running scans. On one system, malware prevented the installer from downloading the latest components; tech support offered an offline installer that worked around that problem.

Ransomware prevents normal use of Windows on the remaining system; it only works in Safe Mode. Tech support Panda's PScan, a kind of message-based remote control tool, to diagnose the problem and eventually switched to real-time hands-on remote control to effect a fix.

With all the installations complete, I ran a full scan on each system. On my standard clean test system the scan took 37 minutes, which is about average. However, a subsequent scan finished in less than half a minute. That's fast!

Good Malware Cleanup
After running a full scan on all twelve test systems, I tallied the results. In a few cases Panda asked whether I wanted to remove a particular less-risky item; I always said yes.

At the end of a scan, Panda simply displays the number of items checked, the number of threats found, and the number of threats resolved. You can click a link to expand the display with details, or click another link to open a full report that includes all recent activity.

Panda Antivirus detected 82 percent of the threats and scored 5.9 points for malware cleanup. With 6.4 points, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2013 has the next higher score among products tested with this malware collection. Daily Safety Check Home Edition and Kaspersky Anti-Virus (2013) edged out Bitdefender with 6.5 points.

Interestingly, Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 2.0 took just 5.4 points in this test. It's definitely a different product line from the straight Panda Antivirus. That's also evident when looking at rootkit-based threats. Panda Antivirus detected 80 percent and scored 6 points, while Panda Cloud detected 100 percent and earned 8 points. Kaspersky is the leader in the rootkit category, with 9.4 points. For a full explanation of how I test and score malware removal, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Shark attack survivor wins bronze at Paralympics

(AP) ? Paralympic swimmer Achmat Hassiem uses special motivation to go fast: He imagines being chased by the great white shark that bit off his right leg.

The South African was attacked by a shark off the coast of Cape Town six years ago after he lured the great white away from his younger brother. Before then Hassiem had competed in various sports, including swimming, but wasn't sure what to do after losing his leg.

It was South African Paralympic swimming champion Natalie du Toit who encouraged Hassiem to get back into the water. Before long, he started breaking his country's Paralympic records.

"I took to the pool like a shark in the ocean," he said with a laugh.

The 30-year-old Hassiem came to the London Paralympics determined to do better than his ninth-place finish at the Beijing Paralympics four years ago. On Saturday, he won bronze in the men's 100-meter butterfly.

"My little secret is obviously that I just try and imagine I'm in the ocean and I've got a 4 ?-meter great white shark at my feet," Hassiem said. "It's definitely good motivation to swim fast."

In 2006, Hassiem was the first to spot the shark when he and his brother Taariq were on a lifeguard exercise off a popular beach in Cape Town. He shouted to colleagues in a nearby boat to get Taariq out of the water, while Hassiem distracted the shark by slapping the water.

The shark then bit Hassiem's right leg and dragged him about 50 meters.

"I gave one last enormous push and heard a great snapping sound," Hassiem said of the moment he lost his leg.

As he was being pulled onto the boat by his brother, Hassiem said he looked back and saw the shark chewing on what must have been his foot.

"I believe I lost my leg for a good reason," he said. "Losing a leg is nothing compared to losing my brother, so I'm just trying to make the best of it."

Du Toit, one of the most decorated Paralympians who was also the first amputee to compete against able-bodied swimmers at the Olympics in 2008, said Hassiem was an inspiration to others.

"It's been great to see Achmat do better and better in the last couple of years," she said. "I think he's become a role model because people look at him and wonder how they would cope in that situation. He's just gotten on with it and kept going."

Later this week, Hassiem will swim in the 100-meter and 400-meter freestyle events.

"That shark turned my life around for a reason," he said, "and I've got to make the best of all my opportunities now."

A look at tech companies with recent IPOs

This week, Pandora became the latest of the newly traded tech companies to report earnings. Here's a look at earnings reports from some tech companies that had IPOs since last year. The companies are all loosely Internet-related, though their businesses vary widely.

? July 25: Zynga Inc. says it lost money and received less revenue than anticipated in the second quarter because "CityVille," ''FarmVille" and other games are not attracting as many paying players as they should. Its stock tanked and dragged Facebook's shares as well because the social networking icon relies on Zynga for a good chunk of its revenue ? 12 percent last year. Revenue fell below Wall Street forecast, while expenses grew. The company says the number of players increased only because it got more players from its acquisition of OMGPop, the maker of the mobile game "Draw Something." Zynga began trading on Dec. 16, 2011.

Angie's List Inc. reports that its losses are still piling up as the company spends more to lure people to its online business-review service and persuade them to pay to see ratings on everything from plastic surgeons to sewer cleaners. Angie's List began trading on Nov. 17, 2011.

? July 26: Facebook Inc. says revenue grew 32 percent to $1.18 billion in the second quarter, slightly above analyst expectations. It had a net loss of 8 cents per share, mainly due to stock compensation expenses following its IPO. Adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share matched Wall Street's expectations. Investors weren't impressed and after a brief spike, Facebook's stock tumbled. It was Facebook's first quarterly earnings report since public trading began on May 18, 2012. Facebook now has 955 million users, up about 50 million during the quarter.

? Aug. 1: Online review site Yelp Inc. reports a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue than Wall Street expected, surpassing analysts at a time when many of its fellow freshly public Internet companies are taking a beating from investors. Its outlook was also better than anticipated. Yelp began trading publicly on March 2, 2012.

? Aug. 2: LinkedIn Corp.'s net income fell in the latest quarter as the professional networking site spent more money to grow its business. But revenue grew faster than expected, and the company raised its forecast for the year. LinkedIn began trading publicly on May 19, 2011.

? Aug. 7: Jive Software Inc., which makes Facebook-type social networks for businesses, reports a smaller loss and higher revenue. But the midpoint of its full-year guidance falls below analysts' expectations. It began trading on Dec. 13, 2011.

? Aug. 13: Online deals website Groupon Inc. says its quarterly earnings beat Wall Street's profit estimates, but it underwhelmed analysts with sales growth hurt by unfavorable currency movements. A weaker euro and U.K. pound meant that sales made in Europe got converted back into fewer U.S. dollars. Groupon began trading publicly on Nov. 4, 2011.

? Aug. 14: Shares of Angie's List suffers the biggest one-day drop and closes at a new low following the expiration of a ban that had prevented some investors from dumping millions of additional shares. The price dropped, even though there was no word on whether any of the major investors had dumped their shares.

? Aug. 16: Facebook's stock hits all-time low after the expiration of a similar ban.

? Aug. 20: Facebook's stock trades below $19 ? half its IPO price ? for the first time, though it bounces back to close at $20.01. It's disclosed that Peter Thiel, one of Facebook's earliest investors and a member of its board, was among the insiders selling stock after a lockup expired a few days earlier.

? Wednesday: Pandora Media Inc. reported results that resonated well on Wall Street, even though the Internet radio service's losses widened. The setback was offset by evidence that Pandora's efforts to attract more listeners and sell more advertising on mobile devices are paying off. And Pandora's management predicted the company's performance in the current quarter will be better than analysts had expected.
